Taking Care Of Yourself

Being the best you can be involves many things.

Proper exercise, a healthy diet, enough rest and relaxation, a positive attitude, and regular chiropractic adjustments to maintain a healthy spine and nervous system are all important.
Taking Care Of Yourself
Exercise:
Different methods of exercise suit different people. It is important when embarking on any exercise programme or activity to take care and be sensible. It is recommended that if you have been receiving chiropractic care you consult your chiropractor to find out when you are ready to begin exercising again and what you should be doing to maximise your results.
The popular concept of ‘Go hard or go home’ is not always the best idea. Doing to much, to soon can often lead to injury and cause lengthy set backs in your recovery. While exercise is important for any healthy lifestyle, it is important to do the right sort of exercise for your circumstances.
Walking, swimming, pilates and yoga are all great exercises, especially for people who have back problems. Regular stretching is an important part of a daily routine aimed at maintaining movement, flexibility and strength. Just look at cats and dogs. Every time they get up from a sleep or lying down they will stretch. Not only does it feel good – it is also good for us! It is important, as with any exercise to start slowly and carefully. Overdoing it initially can cause injury and frustrating set backs.
A stretching programme can be started at any age. It is never to late. Research has shown that people in the 60’s and 70’s who have never stretched before see an improvement in flexibility, movement and energy just from regular stretching!

Healthy Diet:
One of the causes of Vertebral Subluxations which cause harmful irritation to the nervous system is chemical irritation. This may be caused by anything from medications, alcohol or drugs, to caffeine, sugar or to much processed foods. A healthy diet means moderation! It means put good things into your body and you will get good things FROM your body! Eat fresh foods rather than processed foods high in fat, sugar and salt. And of course drinking enough water is essential. When we don’t drink enough water we get dehydrated and this can affect our muscles and joints as well as most other parts of the body!

Rest:
These days, most of us don’t get enough rest. You may wonder why this is necessary to be healthy. The human body does most of its healing when we are at rest. While we sleep at night our bodies run damage control! Our immune systems work better when we are rested so we are more resistant to colds and flues. Without the proper rest, tension builds up, structures are weakened and we leave ourselves vulnerable to injury and illness.

Attitude:
Keeping a positive attitude really does help us to feel better! The old saying ‘laughter is the best medicine’ is quite true! People who have a good attitude, feel healthier and tend to recover from illness and injury faster than those who focus on the negative.

Regular Chiropractic Check-ups:
The damaging effects of vertebral subluxation often develop without immediately causing obvious symptoms. Often, by the time we notice the symptoms serious damage has already been done to our spine and nervous system and we are already feeling the effects of a less than perfectly healthy body. Regular chiropractic check-ups help to detect subluxations early and therefore prevent the long term damage that often occurs. As soon as a subluxation occurs, it begins to have detrimental effects on our health. Muscles, ligaments and discs are weakened and damaged. Joints begin to wear unevenly. Nerve root damage occurs leading to poor function in other areas of the body for example the digestive system, bowel or bladder. During a chiropractic check-up, your Doctor of Chiropractic will generally be looking for postural changes, feet turning in or out, how your body is moving and to see if the muscles are working the same on each side of your body. These and other signs can all indicate that subluxations are present. The sooner they are corrected, the sooner your body can go back to working properly and you can get back to doing the things you love, with the people you love. From the time we are born and right throughout life, a regular chiropractic check up helps us to be, and feel our best.
