About Chiropractic

History

Many people may see Chiropractic as quite a new addition to the healing arts. This is far from the case! Chiropractic was first ‘discovered’ in 1895 and in a little over 100 years has grown into the largest natural health care profession in the world, and the fastest growing. About Chiropractic
There is evidence in the pages of history of spinal ‘corrections’ being performed as far back as 4000 years ago! The ancient Chinese and Egyptians left much evidence to suggest this was a commonly used form of treatment. Even Hippocrates wrote about the benefits of manual correction of the spine and the importance of a healthy and fully functioning nervous system for good health.

Thomas Edison wrote:
‘The Doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.’

In 1895 a man called DD Palmer, then a magnetic healer, performed the first Chiropractic adjustment. The results were nothing short of miraculous. Harvey Lillard who worked as a janitor in Palmers building, had lost his hearing several years earlier as he was bending down working. At the time he had felt something ‘give’ in his back and his hearing had not returned since. D.D. Palmer examined Mr Lillard’s spine and discovered a vertebra was out of alignment near the top of his spine which could have been causing pressure to a nerve going to the ears. D.D. delivered a thrust to the bone restoring alignment and movement to the area. Harvey could immediately hear more clearly. After several more similar adjustments his hearing was completely restored!

D. D Palmer was understandably excited over the results and began treating people will all kinds of conditions and studying the anatomy of the spine and nervous system with great interest. Palmer discovered that misalignments of the spinal bones caused irritation to and subsequent dysfunction in the nervous system, leading to decreased function of the organ and body part supplied by that nerve. He realised that this could contribute to a vast number of common health problems. News of his treatments soon spread far and wide!

Over the years D.D.’s son B.J Palmer went on to develop the science, philosophy and art that makes the chiropractic profession what it is today. B.J spent years researching what his father had discovered, refining and developing techniques.

The Palmers have been quoted as saying
‘From above down, inside out. It happens no other way!’

In other words, the body works, and heals, from the brain (above), down the spinal cord and from there, out to all the other cells, tissues and organs of the body!

It is important to note that in spite of the miraculous results often experienced, Chiropractic is not a treatment for deafness, or for any other condition! It is, however a natural means of restoring function to the spine and nervous system, removing interference to the body’s natural functions, and allowing the full expression of health to be restored. In the absence of interference it is often amazing what the human body can achieve!

It is our goal at Back to Basics Chiropractic to help people of all ages to realise their full health potential and live a life they enjoy, by gently correcting vertebral subluxations and restoring function to the spine and nervous system.
