About Chiropractic
But what is it?
Chiropractic is a science art and philosophy, aimed at locating and correcting small misalignments of the spinal vertebrae (vertebral subluxation). These subluxations can cause interference and dysfunction to the nervous system, which can lead to a state of dis-ease in the body.

How does it work?
It is a known fact that our nervous system controls everything that happens in our bodies; in every cell, tissue, organ and system. Any interference to this communication system between brain and body can lead to ‘dis-ease’, or ill health.

Chiropractors are carefully trained to locate these subluxations (interferences) along the spine and correct them over time. This allows the normal communication between brain, nervous system and the rest of the body to be restored. Your body’s natural, inborn healing mechanism is then able to make any necessary repairs unhindered and restore good health and function!

The human body has an inborn intelligence – called innate intelligence. Your body knows how to be healthy and strong. But when subluxations are present that normal process is disrupted and ill health or a sense of decreased well-being (dis-ease) can result. At Back to Basics Chiropractic we aim to help all our clients from the new born to the elderly, to achieve their FULL health potential.

Chiropractors don't really heal, fix or treat anything. Your body does all the hard work itself. All your chiropractor does is removes interference, therefore allowing your body to work naturally, normally and at its best!

Why do people consult a chiropractor?
Most people initially consult a chiropractor because of some kind of musculoskeletal pain or problem. Aside form being one of the most successful and cost effective treatments for back pain, chiropractic care can also be beneficial to many other common health concerns.

Some of the conditions our patients report improvements in with chiropractic care are:

A Vertebral Subluxation is a chiropractic term describing a condition of the spine where a vertebra has lost its normal function and position in the spine relative to the bones above and below it.

Subluxations limit the optimal expression of your nervous system and therefore limit overall health and wellbeing.

Because every organ, tissue and cell in the body is controlled by the nerves, vertebral subluxations can affect the whole body by causing interference to the function of your nervous system. When a subluxation occurs a number of changes begin to take place. These changes are explained by the Vertebral Subluxation Complex, which includes:
  1. Kinesiopathology – improper movement of the joint
  2. Neuropathology – improper nervous system function
  3. Myopathology – improper muscle function
  4. Histopathology – improper soft tissue function, involving ligaments tendons and discs
  5. Pathophysiology – improper bodily function leading to ill health and disease.
It is the focus and purpose of chiropractic to locate these interferences and correct them to restore the integrity of the nervous system, balance the body, and allow the body to express its fullest potential for health.

Doctors of chiropractic are the ONLY professionals specifically trained and dedicated to locating, analysing and correcting Vertebral Subluxation.

There are 100’s of different everyday things that can cause vertebral subluxations. They can be broken down into three main categories
Causes of vertebral subluxations

Subluxations can occur at any time and to anyone. Often, there will be no immediate symptoms and these subluxations can go undetected for years causing slow deterioration of the joints, discs and other soft tissues around the spine as well as severe nerve damage. Because poor health, bad posture, and spinal damage develop slowly over time, we are often unaware that there is anything wrong at all, until the problems are already well developed.

For this reason it is recommended that everyone gets a regular check-up, even in the absence of obvious symptoms. Early detection can prevent the long term damaging effects of uncorrected subluxations.

A Chiropractic Adjustment is unique. Doctors of chiropractic are specially trained to analyse vertebral subluxations and determine where, in which direction and with how much force to adjust the spinal vertebrae.

A chiropractic adjustment is not the same thing as a ‘manipulation’ (although you may heat these words used interchangeably). An ‘ADJUSTMENT’ is a specific and precise force, delivered to the correct place and in the correct direction which restores normal function to the spinal bones and relieves irritation and interference to the nervous system. With time and repetition, chiropractic adjustments help correct abnormal structural and neural patterns.

It takes time for the body to re-develop new, healthy patterns and indeed to get out of old and harmful habits. That is one of the reasons chiropractic adjustments need to be repeated a number of times to have long term beneficial effects.

There are many different chiropractic techniques available today to adjust the spine. Some are quite forceful and can result in the noise often associated with chiropractic, while others involve only very light touches to certain areas. Still others may involve the use of instruments or other equipment. Your chiropractor will choose a technique for you based on your unique circumstances and needs. The technique used will depend on such things as your age, level of health and fitness and the severity of your problem.

Regular chiropractic check-ups can help to keep your body healthy. In the same way as regular dental check-ups keep your teeth strong and regular check-ups with your GP can detect minor health problems before they develop, regular chiropractic care is often recommended to maintain optimal health, performance and wellbeing.
